Shiatsu is...
Shiatsu comes from Japan and is a therapy in which the body's energy flow is brought into balance via meridians. According to the Japanese view, a flow of energy circulates in the body which - in order to remain healthy - should flow freely and unhindered (Ki).
Factors such as personal and professional stress, grief, an unhealthy diet or lack of exercise can block this energy flow and cause illness and physical complaints.
There are differences in the application of Shiatsu in Germany/Japan. Japanese Shiatsu uses stronger pressure to release blockages and the therapists work very consciously from their own energetic body centre (Hara). In Europe, Shiatsu is usually practised more gently and less deeply.
"Shiatsu no kokoro wa haha gokoro"
( The heart of Shiatsu is like the feeling of the mother. )
There is a saying in Japanese that everyone knows.
My Shiatsu teacher always says;
Shiatsu is "Ai no Teate" (Love of Hand touch) and this is a metaphor for the right Shiatsu treatment. Without effort and manifest physical force, it is placed on the patient's hands, which are deeply worked by the patient's own energy. "Hara" plays a very important role in many body treatments in Japan. In Japanese Shiatsu it is also said that you can feel whether this Hara is present in the hands.
During treatments, we therapists should be there for the patient with our full attention and our whole heart.
It works gently and deeply and always from "Hara".
Shiatsu has a holistic effect, which is very widespread and used as a real therapy in Japan.
